Out from hiding… Many people often walk into my collection and ask “so, what are your favorites?” The simple answer is “they all are!”, after all, who buys cars they don’t love? But when the list gets shortened, invariably a few favorites make the cut. 289 Cobra, 65 GT350, and this car…my 246 GTS Dino. As soon as I mention that, the common response is “if you like the Dino so much, why is it tucked in the corner of your shop, and why isn’t it on your website??” Quite honestly, because this car is like family. You know it is always there and it just is part of the routine. You see, I’ve been around this car for many, many years — too many to count, in fact, as my good friend Bob bought this car brand new. In the late 1990’s, I pushed him to get it out of storage and let me get it running again, as he had basically parked it with 17,000 miles on it many years ago. Once running, his response when I tried to deliver it to him was “just keep it at your shop and drive it around. If you bring it here it will just sit again and with my luck some damn mice will shack up in it.” Soon, enough arm-twisting had occurred and I became the second owner of Dino 08270 in a typical Bob and Colin deal where we horse traded a bunch of cars around until we both got the ones we wanted! Fast forward to now, and 08270 is still an exceptional, unrestored, original Dino. I’ve added about 5,000 miles to the odometer with regular exercise. In 2001 it won “Best Sports Car” and “Best Street Car” at the Road & Track concours held in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. To my good old friend and mentor Bob, who unfortunately passed away in July 2010, and was a noted collector of significant Ferraris, 08270 was the very first Ferrari he ever bought, the one that started it all. For me, it will always be the Dino I always lusted after and now consider myself extremely fortunate to call it my own. Thanks, Bob.
